The dental rehabilitation of the Oral Cancer patient presents a whole host of challenges. In this modern era of micro-vascular free flap reconstruction, many patients present for dental rehabilitation with significantly altered oral anatomy, often with bulky skin flaps overlying the alveolus or in some cases filling the prosthetic space. In addition, altered occlusal relationships, trismus, dental deterioration, patient motivation & risk factors, including radiotherapy make successful treatment a highly specialist area of clinical work. In Liverpool, we have an international reputation in the use of dental & zygomatic implants in the rehabilitation of the head & neck cancer patient. We have developed successful techniques in free-flap debulking and keratinised peri-implant soft tissue grafting to normalise the peri-implant environment, maximising oral hygiene opportunities & comfort as well as ensuring that ongoing cancer surveillance is made easier for all the oncology team.
