This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Merseyside Maxillofacial prosthodontics unit especially regarding visits and training.

Visitors

1. How do I go about organising a visit to your department in Liverpool?

Please use our contact us form to express your interest. Be clear about when you would like to come and what you wish to get out of your visit. We will need a copy of your CV at some point too.

2. How long should I visit for?

We recommend that you visit for a minimum of one week to get a good insight into our Maxillofacial prosthodontic practice. We will allow visits for two weeks if we have availability but generally not longer than this unless part of a funded training program.

3. Are there any fees to visit the unit?

There are no tuition fees for a short visit but there is an admin charge of £100 to process the paperwork relating to clearance for observation / clinical work within the NHS.

4. Can you provide accommodation during my visit?

Unfortunately we don’t have any hospital accommodation that we can offer but there are many decent and economical hotels in the area which our previous visitors have found to be excellent.

Training fellowships

1. How long is the overseas training fellowship?

We provide opportunities to train for 12 or 24 months depending on what you are trying to achieve with your training and dependent on your previous experience and training.

2. What are the Visa requirements to undertake this training fellowship?

Trainees are registered with the National Advice Centre for Postgraduate Dental Education (NACPDE) based at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in order to allow them entry to the UK on a Tier 5 visa. This visa allows entry for up to 24 months for defined medical training.

3. Do I have to be registered with the General Dental Council?

Yes. All UK practicing dental clinicians are required to be registered with the GDC and to pay the annual retention fees. The NACPDE can help overseas Tier 5 trainees with their applications to the GDC. Please be aware that this can take several months and must be carefully planned in order to not compromise the start of your training period.

4. Does the training fellowship provide a university based qualification?

No. The training is hosted by the NHS hospitals and not the University of Liverpool. The training is designed very much as a hands-on clinical training program with access to a high volume of complex patients for hands-on treatment and experience. At the end of the program you will be provided with a certificate of completion of this locally organised fellowship program in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics.

5. Can you help with accommodation?

Unfortunately we have no accommodation which we can provide and all our previous trainees have had no difficulties in finding appropriate accommodation for the duration of their stay.

6. Do I need access to a car?

Access to a car would be helpful but not mandatory. There are good bus links across the city. Traveling between the hospitals is required as part of the fellowship program.

7. What are the fees for the international training fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics?

The NHS charges tuition fees to cover the costs of providing training environment and associated support for the period of training. Price on application.
